Elenia has already installed more than 300,000 new smart electricity meters for its customers

More than 300,000 Elenia customers have already received a new electricity meter that enables more accurate monitoring of electricity consumption. Meter replacements are part of Elenia’s electricity metering reform. Changing the meter is free of charge for customers.

A new electricity meter offers new opportunities for customers to monitor their electricity consumption. The new features can be activated in the Elenia Aina service. The service allows people to monitor electricity consumption almost in real time and view the distribution of electricity loads phase by phase.

The new electricity meter also enables load control, which allows electricity consumption to be scheduled at the desired time. There are several different control options, such as control based on time or on the spot price of electricity. In addition, the new smart meter has a HAN port, which allows the metering data to be used for home automation, for example.

“Usually, the total consumption data is available in different electricity consumption monitoring services with a delay of a day or two. In the Elenia Aina service, consumption data can be viewed phase by phase, and at best, the delay is only a few minutes, usually no longer than an hour,” says Sanni Harala, Chief Customer and Stakeholder Officer at Elenia.

Customers will receive additional information about their meter replacement by mail well in advance of the installation time. Changing the meter is free of charge for customers.

The installations are part of Elenia’s electricity metering reform, in which Elenia replaces the electricity meters of a total of 400,000 customers. Approximately 40,000 customers have newer meters, which will be replaced later. The metering reform began in 2021 and will continue until 2025.

Tested technology

The technology platform for new services was created by the electricity meter and system supplier Aido in cooperation with Elenia. The installation of electricity meters for Elenia will be carried out by Elvera.

“We promote the clean transition by modernising the electricity network and related technology and developing new services for customers. The significance of the smart grid is central to climate solutions,” Harala says.
