Elenia continues to invest EUR 145 million in weatherproof electricity network in 2019

Elenia continues the long-term investment programme and this year company´s planned network investments exceed EUR 145 million. The investments are made in all operational areas of Elenia including Häme, Pirkanmaa, Central Finland as well as Southern and Northern Ostrobothnia. Last year company’s investments in security of supply exceeded EUR 140 million.

Elenia’s investment programme improves the security of supply and promotes local employment within Elenia’s network area. Elenia constructs this year approximately 3,000 kilometres of weatherproof electricity network. The underground cabling is carried out by Elenia’s wide group of contractor partners in all provinces of the network area.

Elenia has nearly 72,000 kilometres of electrical network and 430,000 customers. Elenia’s objective is to increase its underground cabling rate to 75% by 2028. In 2009, when Elenia chose to build only weatherproof distribution lines, less than 20% of its electricity lines were underground. Currently, the company’s underground cabling rate is 45%.

There is about 400,000 kilometres of distribution network in Finland, approximately two thirds of which are overhead lines. Especially in rural areas, the share of overhead lines is still significant.
